February 2012

February is a odd duck of a month here on the river. The days tend to be warm with cooler nights (isn't that a polite way of say it's cold?) and it's still the time of year that may still get rain. But when it's nice, it is very nice. And in many folks eyes it's also the month of love. Course I just consider it a month of fun times and good things around the River.

To start off, I want to talk about one of the best venues this side of the golden gate. The Rainbow Cattle Company has been around since basically forever. I love the space. Not only do they have some of the best prices on a drink, they are also a great hang out space for both the locals and visitors alike. A great tradition is the Wednesday Hump Night Potlucks. This year is the fifteenth annual Roger Gibson Hump Nights and it's still going strong. The idea is you cook a dish, make a salad or desert and bring it down. We all eat, drink and be merry while picking out our favorite item in each category. With weekly winners, who by the way come back to compete in the grand finale; it's not just about the food but it's about winning folks! For the month of February the schedule is February first is Asian food, the eighth is Soups and Salads, the fifteenth is White Trash Fare, the twenty second is Soul Food/ Cajun and the twenty ninth is European (no Italian.). The event continues in March on the seventh with Vegetarian food, the fourteenth Spamorama and the Finale on the twenty first. The fun starts and 7 and runs through to 9. The other fun thing that's going on at the Rainbow is on Monday. Wii Bowling started back in January, but is still going to be going strong past that. The night is all about having fun with the gang. If you haven't wii bowled before, don't worry. It is a fun and easy to pick up game. Though keep in mind even if your a great bowler it doesn't mean your going to be good at this, I'm just saying. The night is a fundraiser for Sonoma County Pride. For the small price of $2 you get drink specials and a ton of fun. The fun starts and 7 and lasts till the last game is played. The Rainbow is located at 16220 Main street, or online at queersteer.com.

Now another favorite venue of mine that's just been around for a few months is Whitetail Winebar. I just adore the ambiance they have going for them. The vibe is so comfortable, I feel like I'm hanging out in my living room, with a great wine cellar at my disposal. The event I want to focus on is Saturday February 18th. They are hosting A Delight for the Senses! Join them for an amorous pairing: Wine and Appetizers – Red and White, Sugar and Spice and Everything Nice. Featuring one of our fabulous local Chefs and a favorite boutique wine producer. And last, but not least our resident psychic Christine Therese Laporte will be on hand to give you some great advice on your love life or anything else you might want to look at going into the new year. Come as a couple or solo, everyone is welcome! Whitetail Winebar is located at 16230 Main Street. 707-604-7449

Now just letting you know, if you are interested in getting a reading with Christine, she is changing up her schedule a bit. I just wanted to make sure that everyone knows that on Fridays she is adding a time slot at the Guerneville Center for Sacred Studies. Friday February 3 and the 24th from 1 pm to 6 pm she will be doing Tarot and Palmistry readings. And starting in March every Friday. (Side note, she is no longer doing Wednesday at Coffee Bazaar.) The cost for her services is very reasonable, you can get a really great reading for $15, if you are just asking one question it's only $10. Of course she is also available for more in depth private readings and parties. If you want more info on her take a look at her page at www.rrpsychic.com. And hey, while your at the center you should check out the great selection on meditation music, crystals and such that they sell. They are located at 13550 Church Street in Guerneville, and online at www.centenerforsacredstudies.org. Also keep in mind that they have Reki Circles and all kinds of classes at different times. They are such a great asset to the Guerneville spiritual community and I for one love the fact that we have them here.

I would also like to mention my friends at Up the River. They have just moved next door into the new digs. One of my favorite stores in town to get goofy fun cards and other things. Keep in mind part of the store is 18 and over, so ya know what I mean when I say 'other things'.

Finally I wanted to touch on one more thing. Who doesn't love Country Dan Karaoke? He has been doing karaoke all around the river for years. With one of the largest song lists I've ever seen, you would be hard pressed to find a song that you would like to sing that he doesn't have. Now the reason I'm talking him up this time around is that he is adding a Sunday night event. At the newly reopened and renamed R3 Hotel. From 8 to midnight you can sing and have a great time. The R3 is at the corner of 4th and Mill. On line at www.ther3hotel.com. And just because I told him I'd mention it, you can find him at The Bullpen on Thursday from 8 pm to 1 am and on Friday 9 pm to 1 am at Northwood. If you want more info on Dan, he's online at www.countrydan.com.

So that's my story for February. Feel free to drop me a line at mzalicedee@gmail.com and tune into the “River Dish” Radio every Sunday other than the fourth of the month; on KGGV 95.1 LP FM The Bridge, streaming at www.kggvfm.org
